Sailor Mars

Soldier of War

Name: Raye Hino
English Anime Name: Raye Hino
Japanese Name: Hino, Rei
Also Known As: Sailor Mars, Super Sailor Mars, Princess Mars
Transformations: Mars Power Make Up (act 3); Mars Star Power Make Up (act 14); Mars Planet Power Make Up (act 24); Mars Crystal Power Make Up (SuperS act 3)
Attacks: Aku Ryo Tai San (act 3) [also seen as Akuryo Taisan]; Burning Mandala (act 14); Mars Snake Fire (act 25); Mars Flame Sniper (SuperS act 3)
Mini-bio: Raye is the third Sailor Soldier, Sailor Mars. She goes to First School for Girls and is the same age as the other soldiers. She grew up with her grandfather in the family temple on Sendai Hill. Her mother died because of her weak heart when Raye was very young. Her father is a politician.
As a Japanese priestess, Raye is very sensitive to any evil forces. Through her fire, she can sense some things, and people say she has ESP. She can be temperamental, and her power as Mars is that of fire. In matters of right and wrong, things are mostly black or white for Raye, who seems to know no gray middles.
Exotic and beautiful, Raye attracts the attention of Bunny. After the enemy captures Raye, Bunny follows her to save everyone, and realizes she is the next soldier. Raye is shocked like the others to learn of her new identity and demands Luna to tell her more about their mission. She is active at school and the temple and wants to be assured of the importance of being a Sailor Soldier.
Although Raye and Bunny don't always seem to get along, they truly care for each other. All of the soldiers are very close friends, even though Raye enjoys teasing Bunny.
Mythology/Symbolism: Mars was the son of Juno and husband to the goddess of strength, Neriene. Proclaimed the god of war, his name was given military honors, and sacrifices made to him before and during battles for their success.
There is no record of the spelling "Raye," but Rei is Japanese for "spirit," "gratitude" or "grace," although they are not even the only possible meanings. Her original name Hino Raye sounds like the Japanese phrase that means Rei of Fire.
Ruby is Raye's favorite stone, the red variety of the mineral, corundum, of which all other colors are referred to as sapphire. Wearing this stone has been regarded to bring wealth, health, wisdom, control amorous thoughts, and ensure lasting beauty. The word "ruby" originates in Latin with the word rubeus, meaning red. It has also been associated with the planet mars.
The color red is often considered one of the most exciting and powerful. It's bright hues can be energizing, dynamic, stimulating, dramatic, and aggressive.
My Thoughts: Raye was very difficult to like at first (even though Bunny did find her enthralling) because she comes across as rude and snobby. But, it was easy to come to like her as her character was explored, especially in the lovely side-story "Casablancas." She is one of the most mature soldiers, and is lovely and graceful on top of that. But, somehow I just don't see skeptical Raye setting time aside to watch "Buffy" as Mixx claims.
