Darkened Roses: the Black Rose Duelists |
Kanae Ohtori
Kanae is very much a pawn used in the games of End of the World. Firstly, she is the fiancee of Akio merely (on his end) so that he can gain the power of being the Deputy (acting) Trustee Chairman of the school. And then during the episode when she is first introduced, she is used by Mikage (who in turn is used by End of the World) as an experiment of sorts to attempt to gain the power of eternity. She is sweet and naive, seemingly oblivious to the true character of her fiance or the nature of his relationship with his sister. However, this may indeed be due to the power Akio wields over her. In later episodes when Kanae is seen complaining about his lack of attention, Akio apparently exerts his influence over her again and she slips back into being a drone, following him blindly. But, as much as she sees nothing wrong with her intended, her feelings about her potential sister-in-law are not far from the surface. When she joins the Mikage Seminar, only a little prodding brings forth her anxiety about Anthy which Mikage draws out and allows to take over her entire personality. But, in the end, even the power granted by the blackened Rose Signet she wore could not win out over Utena and the power of Dios. When the Black Rose was struck from her chest, Kanae lost consciousness and afterwards remembered nothing of the confession or duel.

Kozue Kaoru
Kozue is the twin sister of student council member and duelist Miki. She appears to be a foil to her brother, acting as almost his opposite. Where he is kind, gentle, and helpful, Kozue is devious, threatening, and uncaring. However, she maintains a fierce devotion towards her brother and will not let anything, or anyone, hurt him or take him away from her. It is this intense need to possess her brother that causes her extreme jealousy when she noticed his attraction towards their fellow student, Anthy. Kozue fled to the Mikage Seminar and Mikage quickly harnessed and magnified this feeling that was eating away inside of her. She, like Kanae before her, is given a blackened Rose Signet from the coffin deep in Nemuro Memorial Hall. After she extracted the spirit sword from within Miki, Kozue challenged Utena to a duel in order to gain her brother back for herself. However, once again the Black Rose was struck off. Apparently even the spirit sword of a current duelist could not defeat Utena and Dios. As before, Kozue does not remember anything of this encounter afterwards.

Takatsuki Shiori
Shiori was a former classmate of Juri, but she had transferred schools earlier to follow the boy she believed she had stolen from Juri. However, once back at Ohtori, Shiori learns that the locket Juri wears contains not the photo of that boy, but rather of Shiori herself. Since they had first met, Shiori had been consumed by her jealousy of the other girl, feeling Juri surpassed her in every way and wanting to rise above her and no longer feel so inferior. Once she learns of Juri's feelings for her, Shiori is filled with disgust and a malicious sense of glee at having won, but still is in a turmoil of emotions so she goes to the Mikage Seminar where she spills out her story. She takes the spirit sword of Juri, but is still not able to defeat Utena. Afterwards, she has no memories of the events in the dueling arena, but is even more estranged from Juri, who has recovered her locket.

Tsuwabuki Mitsuru
Mitsuru continues to patiently serve Nanami, but is getting tired of being thought of as a child by everyone. Perhaps he is starting to have feelings for this older girl, or maybe it is just because he wants to be a more effective "Big Brother" to her. After speaking with Utena, he decides he needs experience to be grown up, but does not know how to go about getting it. After his classmate Mari makes fun of him, he goes to the Mikage Seminar and spills out his woes. Later, Nanami finds him watching a video of kissing scenes. Mitsuru takes out her spirit swords, but like the others, cannot defeat Utena. In the end, maybe he isn't ready to be an adult quite yet.
