CHARACTER || Mai Kujaku (Mai Valentine)
SERIES || Yu-Gi-Oh!
TIME || 20-25 hours
COST || $75+
DEBUT || Anime Central 2004
WHY || I made this costume for my friend Kelli to wear. She and my husband have this strange fascination with Yu-Gi-Oh and I mock them for it. But, I agree with Kel that Mai is one of the best character designs on the show. And, any excuse to drag my friends into my cosplay world.
HOW || The jacket was the first thing I had sewn on my own and it was pretty complicated. I ended up having the resew the collar on a couple of times before I got it right. The first time I made the skirt it ended up being way off on size, but the second time was really easy to complete and fit Kelli perfectly. The corset-style top was easy overall, but time-consuming to sew all the sections together. Kelli styled her own wig and made the glove/gauntlet. Her mother made the boot covers, which were glued to a pair of old shoes from the thrift store.
