WHY || Just got the Nadesico DVD box set for Christmas and have really been enjoying watching that series. When I was coming up with ideas to cosplay ACEN 04 I was thinking a Nadesico character besides the usually cosplayed Ruri or Yurika would be nice. And, as I both like Megumi as a character and already have a purple wig, I thought of her. Plus, I like character designs with thigh-highs. I don't like wearing them, but I like how they look. ^^;; However, I never even got the costume started before ACEN, so I pushed it back until later in the year. Now, it is for Anime Reactor 04.
HOW || First, I Frankensteined some patterns together, tracing parts of different patterns together on interfacing, with some major alterations. I then cut the pattern out of muslin and sewed a mock dress, to which I made alterations and took apart to become my final pattern. Overall, the pattern worked very well. But, there was some strangeness at the seams between the orange and black sections. Another tough part was the orange sleeves. They were just not designed to be created in real life and gave me a lot more trouble than expected.
The shawl was made out of a remnant of yellow fabric cut into a square, folded in half, and sewn into a triangle. Then, a strip of fabric was sewn and velcro attached, which became the tie for the shawl.
The shoes began with pumps bought at a thrift store. I then covered the shoes with gray craft foam, glueing it on in sections to mimic the metallic look of the character shoes. Additional pieces were added to the top to look more like intended.
This was my first real styling of a wig. (I just had to brush the wig for Eri-chan.) The wig had a wave to it, so it took forever to brush out, even with detangler. Then, I pulled it back into a ponytail, which I braided. Hairs were left out of the ponytail in the front, with were cut and styled into tendrils using styling glue. Hair clip accessories were made out of craft foam and beads which were painted with acrylics.
