Wedding symbolism
This section talks about gemstones related to Bunny/Sailor Moon in many ways, either because of the stone itself, the color it is popular for, or otherwise.
Diamond
The diamond is very important to Bunny for a variety of reasons. First of all, it is Bunny's favorite gemstone. A diamond is a girl's best friend, right? This may have something to do with her favorite color, white, and her dream to be a bride. A diamond is typically considered a clear or white stone, although it usually has tints of yellow or brown except in exceptionally fine, called colorless. (Diamonds can come in fancy colors such as blue, red, green, lavender, pink, and others, but these are more rare than the white stone.) So, the diamond basically fits into her favorite color.
The diamond is also commonly used in engagement rings, which has a connection to her wanting to be a bride. Keep in mind that Bunny does not dream of being a wife, but rather a bride, the last moments of being single and part of the engagement rather than the marriage. Engagement bands have been typical since the middle ages, when Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring as an engagement gift just hours before they married in 1477. In those medieval days, diamond was only available to the rich and powerful for engagement and wedding rings. Today, most couples still use diamond in their engagement bands. The gem on Bunny's ring in the picture is probably a diamond.
Diamond is nature's hardest substance, which led to it symbolizing unyielding power and strength. This seemingly unbreakable substance was thought to be perfect to symbolize marriage as well, "What God Has Joined Together, Let No Man Put Asunder." The word diamond comes from the Greek adamas, "the unconquerable."
The diamond also fits Bunny as Sailor Moon. To the people in early times, diamonds were associated with innocence, justice, faith, and strength. Others have thought that diamonds can bring wealth, happiness, and victory. Some of these elements go with Sailor Moon, soldier of love and justice. She seems to be the most innocent of the scouts (at least in some ways), very naive at times. Sailor Moon also has a strength that enables her to win victory and bring justice and happiness to all.
Pearl
Although not her favorite gemstone, I am sure Bunny feels the connection to pearl as well. Since her birthday is in June, the pearl is her birthstone. This stone has been closely related to love and marriage throughout history. Also, the traditional white color of the pearl fits in perfectly since it is Bunny's favorite color.
If the diamond is the gemstone of engagement, then the pearl is that of marriage. Pearls have been the traditional adornment of the bride on her wedding day and have been closely associated with the wedding ceremony for over 3,000 years. Bunny herself wears 3 strands of pearls on her wedding day, as seen in the picture at the top of this page. Even today, the tradition of the father of the bride, or the groom himself, giving the bride pearls on her wedding day continues.
Moonstone
The gem moonstone is the alternate birthstone for the month of June. Moonstone is a member of the feldspar family and is transparent milky-white to bluish-white in color. It is considered to be good luck, especially for lovers. A lover's gift of this stone is said to arouse tender passions and give lovers the ability to foretell their future.
This stone's name probably comes from a theory that one can observe the lunar month through the stone. A small white spot is said to appear on the stone as the new moon begins, and moves toward the stone's center, getting larger, until the spot takes the shape of the full moon in the center when the full moon occurs.
The color, the relationship with June, and the associations with the moon give the moonstone connections to Bunny and Princess Serenity.
Corundum (Ruby and Sapphire)
In addition to her favorite color of white, Sailor Moon is also associated with the colors red and blue- the other colors of her suit, and also her junior high school uniform. The mineral corundum is known as sapphire, which is best known for it's blue color but comes in many colors, with red being known as ruby.
Due to its red color, the ruby is associated with the heart. Historically, it is symbolic of love and passion, and is said to ensure the beauty of those who wear it. This certainly fits Bunny who has the passionate love of Darien, and who also uses love in her fight for justice. She also has a very definite inner beauty that seems to attract everyone to her- from Diamond to Haruka.
Sapphire is considered celestial, symbolic of the heavens due to the popular blue coloring. It is known as the bestower of innocence, truth, good health, and preserver of chastity. The connection to the heavens relates to Bunny's past life, when she lived in the Moon Kingdom during the Silver Millennium, in the heavens.
