The original story of Sailor Moon was published as a Japanese manga story, created by manga-ka Takeuchi Naoko. The story was known as "Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon", and is Ms. Takeuchi's most famous work. It was predated by the series "Codename wa Sailor V." This was originally going to be a single volume work until Toei Animation, Co. expressed interest in making it into an anime series. However, the animation studio wished for a group of sailor-suited warriors, thus the Sailor Team of "Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon" was born.
"Codename wa Sailor V" is based on the adventures of Aino Minako, a 13-year-old schoolgirl who meets a white cat named Artemis who can talk and teaches her to transform into Sailor V. She uses her magical powers to fight strange enemies around Tokyo who are not even human. Later, she finds out that she is actually Sailor Venus, a member of the inner senshi and protector of the Moon Princess of the Silver Millenium. The first volume was published in summer of 1991, and continued to be published infrequently in the magazine RunRun until May of 1997. Please note that it was not finished until after BSSM (Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon) was over.
"Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon" translates to "Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon" and first came out in February 1992, just months before the anime series of the same name began in April. It continued to be published monthly by Kodansha Comics until the final chapter, act 52, ran in March of 1997. Besides being published monthly in Kodansha's magazine Nakayoshi ("Good Friends"), BSSM was also compiled into 18 tankouban books, which typically consist of 4 acts, or chapters, a piece. These tankouban volumes correspond to the Pocket Mixx books published by Mixx in the United States.
