A long time ago, the period of the Silver Millennium reined on the Moon while the Earth was in ancient times. The Moon was ruled by Queen Serenity, whom the people of Earth called Selene, goddess of the Moon. The heir to the Silver Millennium was Princess Serenity, guarded by four Sailor Soldiers, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury. Those of the Moon lived long lives, extended by the power of the Silver Imperium Crystal. It was their duty to watch over the people of the Earth.

Its crown prince, Prince Endymion, ruled the Earth Kingdom. He had four warriors-- Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoicite, and Kunzite-- who served him.

The Moon had a dome of green plants and life, but was mostly barren. Consequently, Princess Serenity would sneak down to Earth to visit the lush fields and pools of water it had to offer. It was there that the Prince and Princess met. Although communication between the Earth and the Moon was forbidden, it was to late for Serenity and Endymion, who were already in love. In jealousy, a young woman named Beryl watched the couple, since she was in love with the Earth prince as well.

That year, the goddess of evil, Metallia, came to Earth from the Sun. She came into the hearts of the people, making them envy the long lives of those of the Moon Kingdom, causing them to hate. All fell to the evil except Endymion; even his warriors were taken by the enemy. The people of Earth attacked the Moon, led by the young woman Beryl, who was consumed with jealousy and killed Endymion while he was protecting Serenity.
